MANHATTAN SKYLINE
The Human Design Collection
On May 29th, just 4 days before I shot this image, One World Trade Center (the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere standing at 1,776' and America's most symbolic memorial) opened its observatory for the first time. This is one of history's first photographs of the event.
When I traveled to the Northeast it was the end of May and raining. At this time of the year it's common for storms to last for weeks on end. I wasn't sure if photography was in the cards but luckily just after a few days the rain stopped. Late afternoon I headed to Brooklyn Bridge Park and was astonished by how the sky was still dominated by scattered clouds. A tremendous feeling of exhilaration rushed through me. I knew there was a strong chance of capturing a unique and powerful photo of NYC.
As the city lights flickered on and the sun dipped below the horizon an incredible scene unfolded before me. The Freedom Tower antenna lit up in the sky like a lightning bolt, the Brooklyn Bridge became alive as each bulb on its cables turned on, buildings began to colorfully reflect off of the East River, and the clouds were powerfully illuminated by the full moon. All of the finest elements on the skyline were showing off at the same time.
After midnight I viewed the pictures on my laptop. I was taken back by an incredible discovery. Every image had a lone celestial light shining in the sky. It was miraculous that even with all of the cloud cover, city lights, and strong moonlight, somehow this light was bright enough to radiate through. I can't help to feel this is something deeper and more significant than just a planet in the sky. Perhaps it’s more of a sign, a spiritual connectedness between the observatory finally being open, those who lost their lives in 9/11, and the ones who are here to remember.
